What is privilege? This one word can mean so many different things to so many different people. To me it means advantage and something that many of us probably take for granted. Being a white female who grew up in a two parent household, never feeling the pressure of lack of money and working in a female dominate industry; I know I’m privileged. Sadly we sometimes don’t realize we are or even how much we are until it’s visually seen. A job I had awhile back, during a training they had us watch a privilege walk video. Truly eye opening! I followed along and answered the questions myself. Each time that I could take a step forward and then seeing how many had to take that same step but backwards, tears flowed down my cheeks. It really put in perspective for me how as a community we’re so divided and then really seeing how privileged I am in many situations where others are not. In the video you see all the different diversities starting out in the same place, just like each of us on our birth day. They’re holding hands ready to make this journey together and help one another, but then as the video goes on, hands break apart, distance separates people; society and privilege have intervened. In another privilege walk video I watched, I loved how one of the people in it said as the exercise went on they tried to stay holding hands, but came to a point where they couldn’t and then at the end of it she wanted to grab the person’s hand she was holding again to see how she can help bring her along or to help her feel like she’s there to help support her. I wish in this society this is how everyone felt and acted. I wish we could all look past the external things of someone and truly look at who they are inside; God made each of us for a particular purpose! No one’s journey is easy due to certain circumstances, so why do we as humans make it even harder for each other?!
